Olomouc - Cervenka Railtrack Modernization

The railtrack Olomouc - Cervenka forms a part of the third arm of the Second Railway Transit Corridor. The goal was to improve the operational and technical specifications of a 9.25 km strech of track between the towns of Olomouc and Cervenka. The challenge was to implement it under sensitive environmental conditions.
With the help of lates technology, Skanska could minimize disturbance of the protected nature area of Litovelské Pomoraví, as well as delays that affected the local train timetable. The result? Among other things, an increased track speed of 160 km/hr and a raised load capacity class of D 4 - all on time and within budget.

Constructing the project

The modernization dealt with refurbishment of the track subbase and upper structure, fly-over access to the platforms, refurbishment of the platforms, construction of underpasses and ground structures, refurbishment of bridges and culverts, construction of three new road flyovers, incl. new routes of adjacent roads, a bus turning place, noise protection measures and other structures affected by the development. The project also comprised modernization of the traction line, safety and communication equipment, control equipment, heavy-current electronic equipment, refurbishment of cable routes and lighting. The project has the character of a line construction and it was fully implemented on the existing railway track during bidirectional single-track operation.

Additional information

Because of environmental protection issues, a special technology "without dismantling the track rack" had to be used to set up the substructure using a special machine of the type RPM 2002. This machine is unique because it simultaneously installs the track bed and puts the track rack (which can also be tamped) back onto it. The machine has two extraction chains. Aggregates extracted with the first chains are cleaned, prepared in the crusher and used in the track bed or (depending on the grain size) into the construction layer. The tracks were ground with the grinding machine SPENO (for the first time, with exhaustion of heavy metals) in order to achieve the precise micro geometry of the track and to decrease the noise level. During the implementation in the sections where the technology without dismantling the track rack was used, it was not necessary to make access roads to the construction site outside the railroad tracks.

Environment

Regarding the fact that almost the entire construction was within the borders of the protected nature area of Litovelské Pomoraví and went through a zone of hygienic protection of water resources, there were high demands that the work be done in such a manner that these natural sites and water resources were in no way damaged or impaired.
