Developing the project
The new hospital is less than 1.5 km from the town centre and was designed to be a landmark for the community it serves, with greatly improved access for both pedestrians and vehicles. Most clinical services will be within one building, with separate emergency and elective departments. Wayfinding has been designed for clarity throughout the whole hospital.
The new Diagnostic and Treatment Centre will be accessed from a new main entrance and will provide specialist and generic outpatient services, day case services and operating theatres. The new Women, Children and Young People’s Centre will have its own dedicated entrance from the main hospital concourse and will provide integrated care for both inpatients and outpatients, with shared diagnostics and operating theatres in a secure environment closely linked to the existing maternity unit.
Health Care Projects (HCP) is responsible for management services on the project. Soft FM services, including waste and medical equipment will be undertaken by the Trust. The Architect for the scheme is Steffian Bradley Associates.
Constructing the project
Throughout the phased construction period, all existing healthcare facilities will remain fully operational. This has been enabled by Skanska’s installation of a large amount of temporary accommodation.
Construction began in 2008 with the completion of all new accommodation set for the autumn of 2010 and full completion of the scheme in the summer of 2011.
