WYLIE, TX — Skanska USA Building, one of the world’s leading construction and development firms, has reached a major milestone on Collin College’s Wylie, Texas, campus with the topping out of the new Wylie Campus Work Center. To celebrate the occasion, representatives from Skanska, its project partners and Collin College leadership signed the final steel beam before it was lifted into place.

Spanning 66,309 square feet, the Wylie Campus Work Center facility will expand Collin College’s  capacity to serve students and help meet the growing workforce needs of Collin County. The facility will include specialized lab environments, general classrooms, faculty offices, a dedicated welding shop, an unconditioned fabrication materials yard and shell space to accommodate future instructional programs.

Students will receive hands-on training in programs including welding, HVAC, electronic engineering and health professions, with additional disciplines to be announced. The facility is designed to support the region’s growing population and demand for graduates with technical skills.

"As demand for skilled technical workers continues to grow across Texas and the nation, colleges are investing in facilities to support the need," said Dennis Yung, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska USA Building in Texas. “We’re strong proponents of the skilled trades, and we’re proud to work with Collin College to create a place where students can build hands-on skills and prepare for careers in these essential fields.”

The Wylie Campus, which opened in 2020, continues to grow, with this facility being the latest investment in the college’s future and workforce education.

"This new facility represents our continued commitment to providing students with the education and skills they need to succeed in today’s workforce,” said Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College district president. “As Collin County continues to grow, we are focused on expanding opportunities for our students while preparing a highly skilled workforce that meets the ever-changing needs of our local industries.”

Skanska has played a major role in shaping Collin College’s growth across the region, contributing to projects on campuses in McKinney, Plano and Frisco, and serving as the construction manager for the original Wylie campus. That project included six buildings totaling 340,000 square feet, designed to serve 7,500 students on a 96‑acre site. Stantec served as the architect for the original campus and continues in that role for the new expansion.

Construction completion is expected during summer 2027.
