“For the moment there is a huge debate ongoing: are we going to preserve everything that we have already built or are we going to look at more nuanced way of developing our future?” says Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, architect and Founding Partner, Snøhetta.

Together with Ståle Rød, Executive Vice President, Skanska Group, they discuss the pros and cons when it comes to restoration versus new construction.

What aspects should be taken into account when deciding whether to renovate an old building or build a new, net-zero carbon building instead?

“There is a balance between the users’ specific needs, the project's specific needs, in terms of what you can do and what you should do,” says Ståle.
