About the project
Powerhouse Kjørbo consists of two original office blocks that have been fully renovated to energy-positive building standards. Through optimisation and innovative use of proven technology, energy demand has been reduced by more than 86 percent. The buildings generate their own energy using solar panels, geothermal wells and heat pumps, with surplus energy supplied to both neighbouring buildings and the power grid.
The renovation includes highly insulated and airtight building envelopes, energy-efficient windows, demand-controlled ventilation and maximum utilisation of daylight. At the same time, all interior spaces have been upgraded to modern and flexible office environments, with a strong focus on a healthy indoor climate.
Skanska’s delivery and role
Skanska served as the main contractor and was a key partner in the Powerhouse collaboration. Skanska was responsible for carrying out the renovation and achieving the ambitious energy and environmental targets in close collaboration with the client, architect and consultants.
Sustainability and customer value
Powerhouse Kjørbo demonstrates how existing buildings can be renewed and actively contribute to the green transition. The project has served as a pioneering example for both the Norwegian and international construction industry, demonstrating that commercial value creation can be combined with significant climate and energy benefits.
The project achieved BREEAM-NOR Outstanding, the highest level of certification in the scheme, becoming the first completed building in Norway to do so.
