Project information
Nordøyvegen is one of Norway's most spectacular transport projects and provides a mainland connection to five island communities outside Ålesund. Through underwater tunnels, bridges, and roads, Skanska has contributed to a safer, more predictable, and ferry-free everyday life for residents, businesses, and public services in Nordøyane.

About the project
Nordøyvegen connects the islands Lepsøya, Haramsøya, Skuleøya/Flemsøya, Fjørtofta, and Harøya to the mainland in Møre og Romsdal. The project includes a combination of sea fillings, bridges, and underwater tunnels, and has demanded great technical construction expertise, logistics, and execution in a weather-exposed coastal landscape.
In total, approximately 13 kilometers of underwater tunnels have been built, distributed over three tunnels, as well as about 8 kilometers of road on land, including three bridges. The Lepsøy Bridge is the most prominent structure and is a steel bridge with the longest span in Norway.
The project has encompassed all central disciplines within construction, and the execution has been characterized by challenging ground conditions, extensive marine works, and the need for precise collaboration between many professional environments.
Sustainability and environment
Nordøyvegen has had clear sustainability ambitions and is certified at the level “Good” according to the international sustainability standard CEEQUAL.
Skanska implemented a number of specific environmental measures in the project, including:
- Use of hybrid electric wheel loaders in tunnel driving, which reduced emissions and improved the working environment.
- Choice of rock protection solutions that reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to an office building.
- Systematic work to reduce plastic pollution in the sea, including through electronic igniters, cleanup measures, and cooperation with the Plastpirates.
Value for customers and society
Nordøyvegen has replaced two ferry connections and one express boat connection, providing the residents of Nordøyane with a year-round, ferry-free connection to the mainland. This has made everyday life more predictable, strengthened emergency preparedness, and better facilitated business development, cooperation between local communities, and access to public services.
The project was awarded Construction of the Year 2022, a recognition of both execution, cooperation, and the final result.
The story of Nordøyvegen
Some projects are primarily about meters of asphalt, tons of stone, and technical solutions. Others are equally about people, everyday life, and opportunities. Nordøyvegen is both.
