New highways underpass is taking shape

Drone footage captures latest progress at Black Cat junction

A428 Black Cat underpass construction

New drone footage offers a striking view of progress at the Black Cat junction on the A428 in Cambridgeshire, where teams are delivering a major transformation to one of the region’s key transport routes. Watch the video here.

The video shows construction of a new underpass being built seven metres beneath the existing roundabout. It is a complex operation, taking place in a tightly constrained and heavily congested area, while traffic continues to flow around the site.

At the heart of the project is the new free-flowing A1 underpass, which will improve journeys through the junction and help ease congestion. The wider scheme also includes a new 10-mile dual carriageway for National Highways, with vehicles set to travel on a bridge above the underpass.

Dan Trathen, Project Director said: “Delivering work of this scale in such a challenging environment requires detailed planning, close coordination and strong collaboration across the project team and supply chain. Through that combined effort, the new Black Cat junction is steadily taking shape.”

The latest drone footage highlights both the scale of the engineering and the progress being made as the team brings this important infrastructure project to life.
