This stretch of road is more than tarmac and bridges. It is a lifeline. Every day over 85,000 people used the A14 to get to work move goods, visit family or run businesses with a quarter of that traffic made up of HGVs keeping society moving. But for years the road was struggling. Congested. Slow. Too many accidents. It was holding people back and quietly harming the environment around it.

Something had to change.

Starting with people

At the heart of the project were people, thousands of them. As part of the A14 Integrated Delivery Team we worked shoulder to shoulder with Costain, Balfour Beatty and National Highways, alongside a supply chain of around 14,000 people. Different roles, different perspectives, one shared goal, to make the A14 safer, smoother and more reliable for everyone who depends on it.

Making better decisions the human way

The project itself was ambitious, upgrading 21 miles of road, building a new 12 mile bypass around Huntingdon, widening the A14 and A1 and constructing 34 new bridges and structures.

But the real difference came from the decisions we made along the way.

We treated the project a bit like a shared map. We created a single digital one version of the truth. Designers, engineers and supply chain partners could all see the same picture, spot issues early and make informed decisions together.

We also used drones to gather up to date survey, environmental and monitoring data, and embraced offsite manufacturing for the River Great Ouse viaduct. By building parts of the structure locally in a temporary flying factory, we reduced risk, worked more safely, and protected the flood plain. A responsible decision that balanced progress with care for the environment.

Sustainable impact that lasts

The benefits did not stop when the road opened.

Journeys are now up to 20 minutes quicker. Communities are better connected, the road is safer, and the local economy is stronger because people and goods can move more freely.

We were also committed to respecting the past while building for the future. The A14 passes through areas rich in archaeological heritage and by working closely with archaeologists we made sure valuable knowledge was not lost beneath the diggers. That learning now belongs to everyone.

Listening learning and involving others

We did not pretend to have all the answers. We listened. To local residents. To schools. To charities. To stakeholders who understand their communities better than anyone else.

Together we created opportunities from employment to education and left a legacy that goes beyond infrastructure. This was not just about delivering a project. It was about being part of the places where people live.

Looking ahead

There were challenges. Projects of this scale always bring them. But by staying curious open and optimistic and by trusting each other’s knowledge we delivered the A14 eight months early with the Huntingdon bypass opening a full year ahead of schedule.

The project won multiple awards, but the real success is seeing how everyday life is better because of responsible decisions made together.
