We delivered the Bermondsey Dive Under and associated strengthening works for Network Rail as part of the Thameslink Programme, helping create the capacity needed for more services through central London.

This was about more than building infrastructure. It was about making everyday journeys more reliable for the people who rely on them.

A major challenge for the programme was reducing delays outside London Bridge, one of the busiest and most complex parts of the rail network. Two key upgrades were required. The first was the new viaduct at Borough Market, completed in 2012, which added two much-needed tracks at a critical bottleneck. The second was the Bermondsey Dive Under, a new grade-separated junction connecting the lines from New Cross and New Cross Gate into London Bridge station.

The Dive Under allows trains to move more freely through the network. By separating train movements, it removes conflicts on the tracks and helps services run more smoothly.

We were responsible for the design and construction of the Dive Under, which consists of 11 interconnected structures built alongside live operational railway viaducts. Working in such a constrained and busy environment meant every decision had to be carefully planned and executed.

Along the route, we also strengthened a number of bridges and brick arches. Wherever possible, we reused existing structures to minimise disruption, reduce waste and make the most of the infrastructure already in place.

The result is a more reliable railway today, with the capacity to support growing demand in the future. It’s a strong example of how thoughtful design, practical delivery and close collaboration can make a lasting difference for passengers, communities and the wider network.
