Skanska partnered with MWH and Balfour Beatty in the SMB joint venture to serve as design and build partner for Thames Water’s £2 billion AMP6 eight2o alliance.

Bringing together complementary expertise in design and construction, SMB combined a strong track record of delivering complex infrastructure across multiple sectors. This collaborative approach was key to successfully delivering projects in London, an environment defined by its density, regulatory complexity and the need to maintain essential services.

The joint venture’s capability spanned both infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets across clean and wastewater networks, providing the flexibility and resilience needed to support the alliance’s full programme.

Our work helped address the urgent need to increase water infrastructure capacity while improving service for customers and driving better value for communities across London and the Thames Valley.

Key projects included:

Upgrades to Coppermills Water Treatment Works, North London’s largest facility, helping to supply high-quality drinking water to around four million people.
Works at Waterworks Bridge, Stratford, enabling the transfer of sewage from a 350-square-mile catchment, including King’s Cross, Hammersmith, Kensington and Fulham to the Beckton Treatment Works
The award-winning upgrade of the King’s Scholars’ Pond sewer, delivered using an innovative no-dig solution just two metres below the junction of Baker Street and Marylebone Road, directly above the London Underground’s Hammersmith & City line.

Through collaboration, innovation and technical excellence, the SMB team delivered resilient infrastructure that supports London’s growth while minimising disruption to the city and its communities.
