Press release
The Copenhagen Municipality is selling a larger plot near København Syd station to Skanska. This allows the development of up to 270 homes, 130 care homes, and commercial spaces to now begin.
Previously, the area was characterized by heavy industry, and today the site is almost completely empty. But in a few years, there will be both hundreds of residences and businesses at Strømmen 3A in Valby near Copenhagen South Station. This is clear after Copenhagen Municipality has sold the municipal site to Skanska. Copenhagen Municipality wishes with the sale to create a lively, diverse, and dense urban area with mixed housing and open facades.
"If we are to ensure that people with completely ordinary incomes can continue to afford to live in Copenhagen, it is absolutely crucial that we build many more homes. Therefore, we are now opening up for the construction of even more youth housing, family housing, and care homes in Valby. I am really happy about this because the mixed housing is an important contribution to Copenhagen continuing to be a city where one can live all life long – both while studying, when starting a family, and when getting old," says Lord Mayor Sisse Marie Welling.
Skanska, together with DAB-Lejerbo and Tegnestuen EFFEKT, has created a project that establishes a completely new urban neighborhood. On the site, Skanska will build up to 16,000 square meters of housing equivalent to 230-270 homes, of which about half will be public family housing and youth housing. In addition, up to 12,000 square meters of care homes will be built, equivalent to 130 care homes, and 12,000 square meters of commercial space.
With the project, Skanska will integrate green urban spaces, urban nature, and an open communal garden by the residences, which together will contribute to the biodiversity in the area.
"We are happy to have won the tender with an ambitious project where we can develop homes for Copenhageners of all ages. We have good experience with complex urban development and see an exciting opportunity to create a lively urban environment at Strømmen, where it is attractive to live and work. It will be a modern urban neighborhood with its own identity, which many in the city will come to know well," says Peter Nymann-Jørgensen, CEO of Skanska.
With a location in the sweet spot between Valby, Grønttorvet, and the new district at Copenhagen South and the old Sydhavnen, the property at Strømmen will be a unifying piece that connects the surrounding neighborhoods and creates connections across.
When the sales agreement has gone through, the process of preparing a local plan will begin. In this connection, a citizen meeting about the project will be held. It is expected that the final local plan will be adopted at the end of 2027. After this, construction can begin.
